DIY Soda Bread . . . or in laymen's terms, it's homemade

I like do-it-myselfing
Makes me feel like the super woman I always crave to be.
Or at least like I'm made a darn good attempt at it.

So when I find recipes or how-to's on seemingly difficult things
and they actually turn out super easy
I instantly fall in love.
And then feel the inexplicable urge to share the love with you.

I present DIY Soda Bread {it's really just homemade but doesn't DIY sound so much cooler?!}

4 - 4 1/2 cups flour
2 T sugar
1 t salt
1 t baking soda

Whisk this together in a large mixing bowl.  Preferably a brightly colored one.  It's more fun this way.

Use a pastry cutter or your very clean fingers and thoroughly mix in
4 T butter

Make a well in the center.  Add
1 beaten egg
1 3/4 cups milk

Mix with a wooden spoon until dough is too stiff to stir.  With floured hands, knead in the bowl just long enough to make a ball.  Do NOT over knead!
Shape into a round loaf and transfer to a greased baking sheet, stone or cast iron skillet.
{Note: the dough will be slightly sticky and shaggy}
Score the top of the loaf with a serrated knife to allow heat to get to the center of the loaf.

Bake in a 425 preheated oven for 35-45 minutes.
You will know the loaf is done with you tap the top and hear that lonely hallow sound.  You can also pierce a skewer into the loaf.  It should come out clean.

Remove loaf from oven and allow to cool in pan for 5-10 minutes.
Try to keep yourself from consuming in less than 24 hours.

Speaking of bread.  Hubs and I are finally seeing Hunger Games tonight.
You'll find me in the theater stuffing my face with sugar and popcorn
and probably cuddled close to the boy during the scary parts.

Happy weekending!
