15 Minute Pizza Dough // A Family Recipe

My mom and dad tell the story that from their first year of marriage, they ordered in a lot of pizza as my mom was still learning how to cook.  One Valentines Day, a pizza restaurant advertised a special heart-shaped pizza and my mom was convinced they needed to order one.  Turns out it was an over-priced round pizza with a little triangle cut from the top.  My dad -- being the cool person that he is -- thought he could do better, so he clipped a recipe for 15 Minute Pizza Dough from the newspaper and that was the beginning of their Friday Night Pizza tradition.

Now 29 years and 7 kids later, we are all still using this pizza dough recipe and I can't help but smile at the thought of my newlywed parents and dad's superior heart-shaped pizza.  And because I love you guys, I'm going to share this special family recipe!
15 Minute Pizza Dough
// makes 1 large pizza //

2 T yeast
2 t sugar
1 1/2 c warm water
2 t olive oil
1/2 t salt
2 c flour

Preheat oven to 450* and place pizza stone inside to get warm.  Mix warm water, sugar and yeast together and cover for 5 minutes.  Stir in oil, salt and 1 cup of flour.  Mix and knead in remaining flour.  Cover and rest for 5 minutes.  Remove pizza stone from the oven and carefully grease with butter or more olive oil.  Roll out pizza dough and carefully press into hot stone.  Dock the dough and top with desired pizza toppings.

Our favorite are fresh mushrooms, sliced onions, spinach, black olives and cheese.  Bake for 15 minutes or until the underside of the crust is slightly brown.

  6. fun! We have been super into making homemade pizza these days! My recipe takes 90 minutes in the bread maker to make the dough but it is easy for me because I just through everything in and forget it! The pizza part goes so fast because we cook it on 550 (ah!) and it is so yummy.

    But I want to keep this in mind if we have a last minute craving!

  9. Yes! I love love love it! I only make dough in it so it mixes and rises once - then depending on the bread, I move and shape into a loaf pan, let it rise again (2 rise) and bake! I love the shape of bread in a bread pan (hate the shape in a bread maker) but it makes it a lot more easier to mix and rise.

  12. Yes! I am really trying to make more from scratch so we are not always buying bread from the store. Bruce eats sandwiches for lunch everyday so we do eat a good about of bread. I love that homemade tastes better, is fresher and healthier, and cost less to make!
